How to make a Classic Italian Caprese salad

Classic Italian Caprese salad is a typical Italian salad, originally from the island of Capri, from which it takes its name.

This recipe was born in Capri in 1920, in the famous Hotel Quisisana on the occasion of a dinner organized for the poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti.

In short, the founder of the futurist manifesto said that the did not like the typical cuisine of Campania, because of too much fat.

Thus, the chef, to amaze the writer, created the Caprese Salad: a light but still tasty dish that was a resounding success!

From that moment on, becoming a typical dish of Italian cuisine!

Like any traditional dish there are numerous versions and variations, in fact it is often served as finger food, even with the addition of olives. What I propose is the Classic Italian Caprese salad recipe!

This classic Italian salad is a summer recipe, which never fails on the Italian table during this period.

It is served both as an appetizer and as a main course and involves the use of mozzarella, tomatoes and basil, all seasoned with salt, oregano (optional) and extra virgin olive oil.

In conclusion,to make an excellent caprese salad, ingredients of the highest quality are essential.

Its colors are reminiscent of the Italian flag with the green of the basil, the white of the mozzarella and the red of the tomato! A quick and easy Italian recipe that with its flavor will take you directly to Italy !!!

Ingredients (for 4 people):

  • 500 g (17.6 oz) of mozzarella (ideally, buffalo mozzarella)
  • 400 g (14 oz) of tomatoes
  • Basil
  • Salt
  • Oregano
  • Extra virgin olive oil

Method:

Clean the tomatoes and dry them. Cut them into slices of about 1 cm (0.4 Inches)

Cut in slices also the mozzarella (of about 1 cm (0.4 Inches)).

Clean the basil and dry it.

Now, on a plate, put the sliced mozzarella and tomatoes.

Add basil on the top of each slice.

Add salt, oregano and extra virgin olive oil
