How to make Sweet and sour Onionseasy recipe

Sweet and sour Onions are a very simple recipe within everyone’s reach! 

A tasty and quick vegan recipe made with very few ingredients that we usually all have at home

I recommend that you use the famous Tropea onion, one of the Italian agricultural excellence. 

However, if you can’t find it, you can use any variety. 

The important thing is that it comes from local farmers’ markets or, better still, from the plants in your garden.

In fact, growing onions is quite easy and it is possible to produce them in abundance even in home gardens. It is a vegetable that is easy to care for and, at the same time, capable of giving great satisfaction.

Onions have been used as food for thousands of years, seeds dating back to 5000 BC seem to have been found.

In the Middle Ages they were so valuable that they were even used to pay rent or brought as gifts, doctors prescribed these bulbs to relieve headaches!

You can serve sweet and sour onions as an aperitif accompanying them with cheeses (a typical Italian combination) and some croutons, but also as a side dish in fish dishes (perfect for example with fresh tuna or anchovies) or meat.

When I go to my mom’s for lunch, she often prepares them for me because she knows I love them! What I propose today is my mother’s recipe! Try to do it too!

Recipe Difficulty Level: easy Servings: 4

Ingredients:

  • 500 g (17.6 oz) of red onions
  • 150 ml (⅔ cup) of water
  • 50 ml (3 tbsp plus 1 tsp) of vinegar (white)
  • 3 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • Salt 
  • extra virgin Olive oil

Method: 

Slice the onions thinly.

In a bowl, mix the water, the vinegar, and the sugar.

In a pan, pour a thread of oil, and add the onions.

Cook the onions for a few minutes, then add the mixture of water, vinegar, and sugar.

Cook it for about 20 minutes over low heat and let the water evaporate. Add some salt.

This appetizer is ideal to eat with ‘bruschetta or with cheese.
